Club Activities 2024
In addition to the regular programme of competitions and guest speakers the club supports a range of activities and special interest groups through the year. These are sometimes planned and advertised on the member's calendar and sometimes are spontaneous at short notice. We will usually be able to advise members of an activity via a club email notice, the eNewsletter or on our Facebook pages – so keep an eye out for these.
General descriptions of the different activities are as follows:
Special Interest Groups or SIGs
Any member is welcome to suggest and host a special interest group on a photography related topic or activity. We currently have a couple underway in 2023:
Photo Appreciation
All members are welcome to come along to a regular Photo Appreciation evening at 7pm on the first Thursday of the month. Bring some images along (DPIs or Prints - maximum of 6 each) to share and discuss with fellow members in a non-competitive environment. The evenings will loosely focus on the upcoming club competition topics and recent photoshoots. Sometimes a bottle of wine may appear along with some cheese and crackers.
Photoshoots
Photoshoots is a loose term for a local get together at a target venue with a particular photographic topic in mind. They are usually half a day or less and often end up somewhere for coffee or a cuppa. Some photoshoots are well advertised and planned in advance and will appear on the member's calendar, others are spontaneous and will pop up at short notice – often just on our Facebook Notices page – so keep an eye out.
Fieldtrips
Fieldtrips are similar to photoshoots but we use the term to distinguish our major out of town full day or even two day trips. These usually include taking a coach or two where members get to share each other’s company in transit as well as at the various venues along the way. Fieldtrips are more about the place than the photography topic. Fieldtrips are usually advertised well in advance so we can make arrangements for transport and access to venues etc – they often involve costs that are passed on to those attending. In 2023 we are planning an overnighter dates to be advised. Keep a look out for notices.
Workshops
Workshops is a general term for photography activities that usually involve learning something about photography and are held in our club rooms. Workshops will also be advertised well in advance.
Other things
We are always open to other possibilities and opportunities arise from time to time. So keep a look out for any announcements of special events or photography opportunities. Examples have been the recent Lights On Bikes event where the club has been asked to officially photograph the events.

Any member is welcome to suggest and host a special interest group on a photography related topic or activity. We currently have a couple underway in 2023:
- Nature Group – our nature group has been active over several years and hold a number of photoshoots through the year such as bug hunts, garden shoots, bird photography, fungi hunts and the like.
- Shutterbugs is a daytime group for club members, held at the Camera Club Rooms and at photoshoots in places around town. Sessions are typically held twice a month for 2 hours. Through small group discussions and practical activities we get to know our cameras and various aspects of photography. Sessions in 2023 will be organised by Jacqui McGowan with the support of other club members.
- Astrophotography - this is a new group starting. This group is about learning how to take photographs of the the milkyway, night photography and star trails. These photos are done at night and usually from April to October. Sharlene Demspey is the contact person for this group, all welcome not matter your experience.
