The Whanganui Salon 2021 – Humanity and Earth
It is a great pleasure to present the results of the 2021 Salon and, in particular, to announce the winner of the inaugural Vonnie Cave Medal - Alan Martin for his image "Escape over the wire". Vonnie was an inspiration to the photography community here in Whanganui and across New Zealand. Her passing earlier this year makes the awarding of the first medal in her name even more poignant.
This year the Salon has continued to seek images that explore the relationship between Humanity and Earth through three categories:
Humanity and the Natural World
The Works of Humankind
Living in a Changing World
This has given the Whanganui Salon a point of distinction from other national salons. You are encouraged to explore the images in the gallery below and on the accompanying audiovisual presentation at the bottom of this page to enjoy the great diversity of images selected for awards. The Salon saw steady growth of around 10% over the 2019 Salon and we feel we are finding our unique place in the New Zealand photography calendar.
We would like to thank our judges Simon Woolf, Tony Hewitt and Judy Stokes for doing a great job in selecting a diverse set of images for awards that resonate with the overall theme of the salon. We have been generously supported by our sponsors Progear Photographic, Wellington Photographic Supplies and Print Art - many thanks.
Most of all, thank you to the entrants and congratulation to the awardees for sharing your images and your interpretations of the many nuances in the relationship between humanity and the planet we live on.
Looking forward to 2023.
