A Collaborative Project between the Whanganui Camera Club and the Whanganui Heritage Trust
Project Scope
To establish a photographic snapshot of the diversity of domestic dwellings existing in Whanganui in 2022
- Roadside images of good photographic quality
- Cover dwellings from late 1800’s to present day
- Cover all main architectural styles and subcategories plus quirky or non-standard dwellings
- Cover all suburbs across Whanganui city
- Cover small to large dwellings in good repair
The Domestic Houses Historical Record selected 'our homes' Print Exhibition was displayed at the Whanganui Arts Centre (back gallery) 19 Taupo Quay from 8 to 15 October 2022

Over 20 Club Members took photos of around 836 different houses across the city from March to August 2022. With some houses having multiple shots, the total number of digital images transferred to the Alexander Library is over 1250. All houses photographed received a flyer explaining the project and giving owners and occupiers the chance to opt out - this was only taken up in a handful of cases with most people strongly supportive of the project and the inclusion of their home. There were a number of newspaper articles which built public interest. Around 1000 people visited the Exhibition at the Whanganui Community Arts Centre - often spending considerable time working their way around the room and watching the videos.
